Star and Star

Is it sad that one of my sources of pop culture information is Star magazine? Actually I already know the answer to that. But it's the New Glossy Star! How can you not love the New Glossy Star?

I was reading up on the latest MK news (that's Mary-Kate Olsen, who is rumored to be coming home from rehab any minute now) and found an article about Star Jones, specifically about how she's lost circa 100 pounds, going from 300-ish to 200-ish. This is according to the "experts" who are looking at her pictures and guessing her weight.

On the plus side (ha ha! the puns just keep on coming!) they have a picture of her that is captioned enthusiastically: "Now Fabulous at 200 lbs!" She must be fairly short, because at 200 pounds she is not especially slender. But I would agree with the caption: she does look healthy and vibrant and fabulous. And yay for celebrating her still-full figure with such a positive adjective!

(Even if this is the same magazine that points out how "fat" Britney Spears is getting, but I'll save that for another time. But you had better believe there's some relativism happening here. If Star Jones's "before" picture had been 120 pounds and her "after" picture was the current 200 pounds, I am sure the fine folks at Star would have used an adjective other than "fabulous" to describe her.)

On the down side, there is a quote from the same unidentified "expert" speculating that she may have had gastric bypass surgery, because "people her size usually aren't capable of losing weight on their own." So yeah. What the fuck is that supposed to mean? Generalizations about people of a "certain size" and what they can and cannot accomplish do not sit well with me. Evidently this person is an "expert" at talking out of his or her ass.

Off the top of my head, there are several people I can think of who have lost approximately 100 pounds without gastric bypass surgery, and the bullshit message that people like them are "not capable" of doing it might have been a dangerous one to send at the beginning of that long, long road. At the very least it's an irresponsible one.

[Update: More Star Jones posts are here and here, and don't miss out on the comments of that second post.]

Speaking of gossip rags, The Enquirer recently ran a story (which was reprinted in The Week, a magazine I had always considered actually reputable) about how Portia de Rossi (for my money, one of the gorgeousest chicks out there) has recently given up dieting entirely - she's thrown away her scale and decided that obsessing about what she eats and how she looks is a waste of her time, and she only wants to be happy.

This comes after her stint on Ally McBeal, where she got scary-skeleton-skinny - back when there were all those stories about the stars' pursuit of the size zero (and isn't that creepy, in a metaphorical way - it's like you're negating yourself, for fuck's sake).

On the one hand, I am thrilled to see that there are celebrities bashing the skinny-at-all-costs mindset. On the other, I worry about her health in a very dorky way. I think this speaks to my own not necessarilly healthy all-or-nothing mindset - if you're not on a diet-diet, you must be eating crap and getting fat and gross. But that's my own problem. Yay, Portia!

Totally concur with the fact that when she's not skinny as a rail, Portia di Rossi is smoking, smoking hot. And a lesbian! Which means she'll probably totally go out with me.

I love when people like Liv Tyler and Portia di Rossi publicly say, "Whatever, I'm happy" and then go on to live their lives without trying to fit into a size zero. (What an ideal: zero.) I will put them on my list of heroes.

Not to defend the Star, but I'm pretty sure they meant there was no way Star Jones could have lost 100 pounds in the amount of time that she did lose it -- which was super quick, like a few months, or something -- without gastric bypass or something similar, not that it was impossible for anyone to lose 100 pounds without surgical assistance.

Hey Anonymous, did you read the article? I ask because I don't remember that subtext being in there at all. I could be wrong, but if that was their intent, they could have easily rephrased their sentence to make that more clear.

There's nothing that pisses me off more than the "people who are that fat can't lose weight on their own; must have had gastric bypass surgery." fuck that. I've lost 60 pounds (from a starting weight of 257), most of it since the beginning of the new year, and it was merely through finally acknowledging all the things I knew would work if I would actually get up off my ass and try them. i used to daydream about how awesome it would be to have gastric bypass -- look at al roker & carnie wilson! -- but even then, you're getting to the solution without ever addressing the problem. It's the same thing I say about the godawful "carb revolution": I wasn't that fat because I ate an apple and a sandwich, you know?

Anyway, losing my point here. That isn't to say that Star Jones didn't go the Oprah route and have a nutritionist, chef, personal trainer, etc, etc, etc. But even if she did, good for her. if I've learned anything, it's that actually *starting* down this route is the hardest thing of all.

Another 45 pounds to go for me, at least.

Anyway, love the new blog! (this is Lara from atayah.net, btw. What's with the logging in to make a comment thing?)

Sorry about the comments thing, Lara. One thing I do like about these comments is that Blogger sends out an e-mail every time there's a new comment, so I am sure to read them all. I think it's very quick to sign up for an account that will let you post comments without having to log in.

I used to think of gastric bypass the same way, but then Carnie Wilson has managed to re-gain some of the weight, proving that it's not the magic bullet that people assume it is. And isn't Al Roker still heavy? Not to say that there's anything wrong with the way they look, but gastric bypass is serious business, what you're doing to your body, and I think it can cause more problems than it solves sometimes, and doesn't even "work" as extremely as people think it should...?

Actually, it was this horrible article that made me vow to avoid gastric bypass surgery forever. This woman is 52 and literally looks like she's 90. That poor woman.

I did read the article. I actually have a subscription to the Star, because I'm classy like that. But I may have assumed they meant "couldn't lose the weight that fast without gastic bypass" rather than "couldn't lose the weight in general," because the forums at Fametracker have been presuming that Star's had the gastric for a while.

You all should be reading In Touch Weekly, not that trashy Star -- they have such a better perspective and they are much more positive.

I am new to this website and I have enjoyed reading the various comments/opinions submitted. One of the thoughts in particular, that Star Jones may have had a gastric bypass, seems to be the prevailing deduction of most of the people that I have discussed this with. Star looked fabulous even before the weight loss, however, now at around 200 or so pounds, the tabloids are commenting on how good she looks. We all know that (as someone posted here previously) that if she started out on the opposite end of the spectrum (120 pounds or so), that the tabloids would NOT be saying how great she looks, but rather how HUGE she's gotten or how FAT she is (@ the same 200 pounds she is currently being described as FABULOUS). Consider what the media has been doing to Kirstie Ally for the past several months. It's absolutely cruel the way these rags have been portraying her, just because she has gained some weight. This is a very brilliant message to send out to all of the "Mary-Kates" out there who read these magazine articles and feel like the only acceptable way to be is almost invisible because you're so doggone thin. I could go on and on about this but since I don't want to sound preachy, I will just say that if Star Jones chose to have a gastric bypass, who cares??? It's her body, it's her money and it's her business. If she didn't, that's also her business! People are always going to be "experts" about what doesn't concern them. I just wish that people would be more interested and concerned with their own business and stop hating on everyone else.

I really hope that star checks out what people have to say about her...obviously she looks beautiful and people find talking about her interesting. Personally i've had gastric bypass surgery and i've currently lost a total of 90 lbs. and counting...Star looks great and(if?)she had the surgery...Good for her! Everyone can not lose weight with just diet and exercise. It's an emotional thing also and if surgery will make you feel good about yourself and make you a healthier person...what the hell is the problem!

I can't believe all of you think Star had surgery hate to tell you but pilaties does work I did it casually and lose 4 sizes in a very short time I didn't change my eating habit I just did Winsor Pilates and if she has a Pilates trainer and ate right she would no problem lose the weight in a short time.

I saw the view for the first time in a long time today (due to being home for the holiday) and my first thought was "i wonder if she's had gastric bypass." Not only because she's lost a lot of weight in a relatively short period of time, but because she just has that look...I dunno how to describe it, but gastric bypass people just have a certain sort of disproportinant look, at least in the early stages of their weight loss.

As a person of "her size" or at least her former size. I can attest to the fact that you can lose weight without gastric. I've lost 40lbs so far, but for most people, it's really difficult, to take off as much, as fast as gastric bypass patients do.

However, if she's managed to do it, bravo to her and if she hasn't...The whole idea of gastric bypass scares the bejeezus out of me, but I hope it works out well for her.

I definitely think Star Jones had the Gastric Bypass procedure. With Oprah you always caught pics of her in some magazine or tabloid running, working out, coming out of the gym with sweats on, etc. Plus, many people have seen the shows were she featured her personal nutritionist and chef on the show.

However, I have neva caught any candid shots of Star in any magazine or gossip rags in workout gear, coming out of the gym, jogging around Hollywood or NY; or talking about her diet and exercise routine on The View -- Nothing! She is closed lipped about the whole thing.

Usually when people drop a 100 pounds with diet and exercise they find a way to "capitalize" on their success, cause everybody want to know "how did you do it". Here come the book, DVDs, etc. They talk about and promote it on any show they are being featured on, they speak to press about it and basically blow their own horn and Star is notorious for blatant self-promotion. Yet, the only thing you can caught Star doing is dodging the how-did-you-do-it weight loss questions.

I turned on The View this morning and I was shocked to see Star Jones sitting there with that "gastric bypass stare". Its like some people who have gastic bypass there brain goes to mush or something. As a women of size I view Star as a sell out. Always preaching about how "size doesn't matter" and now she skeleton women? ILK. I say EWW . She looked much better fat. Shes not talking about it because she knows shes a sell out. UGG .. life

i know star jones had the gastric bypass surgery i dont know why shes keeping it a secret maybe barbra walters is going to do a special interview with star so they keeping hush hush about her weight loss i agree with most of the comments star jones look bad she doesnt look as happy as she did before she had her surgery and she doesnt even talk about her husband anymore she always talked about al and how in love she was now she doesnt say anything about him where is he and is love still in the air for them

I don't know if Star had bypass surgery but if anyone watched Montel about a year ago, a lady had some such surger and was afraid of dying because if she ate more than about 1/3 of a hamburger, she had to throw up. I have Crohn's Disease and was cut on because I had no choice (I weighed 73 pounds when they diagnosed me). Tell you what, anyone that does that on purpose needs their head examined. I live half my life in the bathroom. I would never do that on purpose. Anyone thinking about it should think twice.

I too think that shes had it done and doesn't want to say... she claims.. we'll find out what she did when her book comes out, but i think its a pitch to buy the book... furthermore the reason i think shes had the surgery is like everyone else, no pictures of her getting skinny.. there were a million pictures of her when everyone kept saying.. wow starr is getting big! and none for her weight loss? Secondly.. If you look at her face.. shes got what gastric bypassers commonly get which is called the "al roker disease" you lose a ton of weight but you still have a big head! she lost the weight as fast as kelly price (the singer) did, who also had it done and isnt ashamed to say so. am i hating on Starr that she lost the weight with bypass? no.. good for her and everyone else thats gone through the proceedure! just dont go the easy route but push the hard route on everyone out there..

Yes, Star Jones had the gastric bypass surgey, and she's not proud of it either, because she thought she will appear more attractive. Sorry Star, the easy route is not always the best way out.

Just to inform people:

1. Gastric Bypass is NOT an easy route by ANY MEANS! It is simply a last resort. People that make this decison have a long long process to go through before the surgery can even be performed.

2. There are doctors galore whom you must see before even being approved for this surgery and getting your "head examined" is a big part of it.

3. People who have never been above extremely overweight tend to be judgemental when you have NO idea how people live and feel when they are larger so please be a little more sensitive.

4. If Star Jones had the Gastric Bypass (which I HIGHLY believe she has), she really doesn't need to be touchy or ashamed of her decision. She doesn't have to glorify it if that is what she is trying to avoid; but being ashamed about it is ridiculous.

Being 100 pounds overweight is not healthy. I'm sure Star Jones' career would still do well with or without the weight on.

So if she did it, it was a lifestyle choice and I totally support her for it.

I'm sure she feels much better now, she definately looks healthier...
It wasn't that easy to have the surgery I'm sure, there is no such thing as easy weight loss. iT all requires commitment!

I once lost 100 pounds without drugs or surgery but it took me 14 months.

Clearly Star had gastric bypass but the reason is NOT because larger women can't lose the weight without it. The reason is the weight loss was so drastic based on the time frame.

Look at other things like how she passed out drinking one drink in public. She has been seen not eating ot barely eating at events - if you are working out to lose weight you have to eat for energy.
She's had plastic surgery as well.

I'm just sorry she feels the need to hid it.

i agree...i thought i couldbt loose the weight...i was 260 and i weight 240 now. but im just started! that is a very successful weightloss but im not starving myself im actually changing how i ate walking daily hanging out with ym friends which is a goodexcersice because we walk EVERYWHERE i dont drive to school or drive to the store i walk i dont think driving is going to help me any ...but ya...for all u big kids.. u can loose the weight just put ur mind to it ....dude if u dont wanan workout and if u dont wanan eat healthy then foget about losing the weight. gastric bypass isnt going to help u its jsut gonan be a way out youre gonan spend thousands of dollars on somthing that could just backjfire and kill you or it could just make u gain the weight back...so instead of wasting ur money why dont u just...workout asnd eat right?
