No Wonder Lindsay Lohan's Doing Coke

This season's ridiculous discussion about the question of whether a perfectly normal-shaped young woman is "fat" is being talked about over at the American Idol LJ. This year's target is Carrie Underwood. Last year it was Diana DeGarmo. I am sure Kelly Clarkson came in for her fair share of it, too. (Fantasia didn't seem to get criticized; possibly it's more acceptable for an African-American woman to not be a stick? I don't know. Just a theory.)

The linked thread is full of people who mostly have the right idea about it. On the other hand, I did read over on Idol Forums (which I will not inflict upon you, what with the crazy blinking icons, smileys, typos, hysteria, etcetera) a lot of posts about how Carrie's "fat" was going to make her "undesirable to record executives" and "impact her ability to do a good performance." HELLO!? She's a size four!

I don't recall people ripping Ruben to shreds, although he is overweight to the point where it's legitimately unhealthy and kind of scary to watch him huffing and sweating all over the place. You really hope the poor guy will get it together.

I love how American Idol is a microcosm of society. Or maybe I just tell myself that to justify the fact that I can't... stop... watching it. Clay Aiken Rulez!!1!

What's going on there?

It's worrying enough that there are people out there called Clay, but Fantasia takes it to a new level. I think there ought to be a law against calling your kid after a Disney film... Or a modelling material either, come to that.

But yes, I agree with you about the ludicrousness of calling anyone fat who's a size 4.

I haven't seen much of the British Pop Idol series (I was asked to leave the room by my family for making snide comments on how samey they all were) but would have to say the double standard didn't seem to apply quite so much - they'd be rude to men or women.

One unfortunate guy from the first series became known as "Fat Rick" to the papers, but got quite a long way, and Michelle from the second series won (she was a size 22, I think). However, I saw her on the cover of a magazine yesterday and she had lost a lot of weight, so perhaps she did come under pressure later.

The point was made at the time, however, that those two stood out from the competition because the others were all so similar in looks and repertoire. So possibly they got extra votes just by being more memorable. (I can't say I've heard either of them sing, mind you, but that's just not my kind of music.)

I'm black and just wrote an entire post about the weight messages I absorb when it comes to race...ie rachel on friends or lindsay lohan being rail thin doesn't faze me, but seeing nicole richie looking like a walking skeleton really bothered me. So I think to an extent, yes it's more acceptable for us, blacks, to not be a stick b/c for the most part, we are ignored.

Beyonce is curvaceous and the msg is, she leads the polls on sexy curvy women. Britney doesn't work out a week and either she's pregnant, (must be look @ the "gut") or she's getting fat.

*sigh*

I am happy I just found you blog. It's really great.

I don't understand people's odd complex that Carrie Underwood is fat. She goregeous, and yes, does have curves. But in no way is that girl FAT.

I will be adding you to my links on my blog, thanks for having such great content :>

I am disappointed by the anon. comment. I was anorexic, and to this day it still haunts me. I can try as hard as I want, but at the end of the day if I eat anything I feel like a failure. Shame on everyone for making this weight 'issue' an issue to begin with. So what if someone is a size zero? If they have the personality of cardboard what does it matter if people like looking at them. And to the girl looking to loose 163 lbs: good luck, and dont rush it, because you can loose all the weight you want and still hate yourself- it isn't the answer to solve all problems!! Trust me.
In conclusion the view of 'fat' is sickly slanted, I am ashamed of the twisted way society acts and ashamed of myself for buying into the trash we create.
