Weight & Wages

Some interesting statistics suggesting that overweight white women earn significantly less than white women of average weight. I don't doubt that this is a valid statistic, but I will offer some anecdotal counter-evidence: my boyfriend and I work for two different ad agencies in San Francisco. Our job titles are the same, and our wages are exactly equal. (Or they were before I got my merit raise.) Obviously, San Francisco is an enlightened place.

I've gotten much less grief since living here than I have anywhere else, that's for sure! Aren't we one of the only cities that has anti size-discrimination laws on the books when it comes to hiring? Big Fat Deal

So what's the Big Fat Deal? Well, at the risk of getting all mission-statementy, I think it's important to call attention to issues of weight in the media, pop culture, and society. If we can convince at least one teenage girl that Ashley Olsen isn't "the fat twin," we will have done our job.
