Fat People Don't Get Hungry

Not to throw my hat into this particular ring, but I followed Scalzi's link over to this person, who says, of the hurricane victims-slash-looters-slash-finders:

"...so many of these 'starving' people who were 'justifiably stealing food' (and sneakers, and Heineken) were fat."

Oh, they were fat, were they? In that case, who needs food at all! It would do them good to live without food for a week or so. She is so right!

I get so freakin' annoyed at people that say stuff like that. I work for a non-profit that feeds people and one thing I've learned is that processed, artificially flavored, artificially colored food is CHEAP and, as we all know, exceptionally unhealthy. But when it's all you can afford you do what you can with what you have. My non-profit, thank goodness, has a staff nutritionist who has a slew of programs to teach basic nutrition education, cooking skills, budgeting, etc. and she teaches to all age levels. And the information is wanted; she's booked constantly 3-6 months in advance.

Not to justify the guy's insensitive attitude, but in the slew of post-hurricane how-to-prepare-for-a-disaster articles in the papers it was stressed that you needed to have a gallon of water per person per day, but for food it wasn't so critical, since you can, in fact, survive just fine with no adverse health consequences for 2 weeks without food. Of course, if you're *diabetic and fat* you may be dependent on a support system of steady food and drugs to stay healthy and alive.

You would not "survive just fine" without food for two weeks. A healthy person would survive, but be extremely physicaly weak and mentally disoriented. They'd also feel pretty crappy.

I think this is an example of people completely missing the point. Looking at a photograph of a distressed citizen looting a store for food and drink to survive...and thinking "hey, she's FAT, she doesn't need food!", that's messed up. Never mind "poor woman, I hope she gets to a shelter" or "does she have kids? I hope they're ok..." Nope, we start analyzing their looting food choices!

rosemary,

I'm not sure we really disagree: I was contrasting two conditions: (1) being dead, and (2) being alive and surviving with no permanent harm. To me, I was just pointing out my opinion that being dead is worse than being alive. "Weak, feeling crappy, disoriented"? Sure, I'll accept that.

But on the other hand, nobody went without food for the full two weeks anyway. And nobody's saying that it was not a big deal for fat people to be deprived of food for a few days. They're saying it was not a big deal for *anyone* healthy to be deprived of food for a few days -- which includes fat people.

To go from eatting toxic and artificialfood and then going two weeks with out food is straining on the body and might even cause death because their body will try to detoxify all of the trash at once. That means all of the toxins that have been stored in the fat will start to break down and then flow into the bloodstream. It might cause toxic overload in the body. If you are fasting you can't just jump into it. It's a slow process; expecially if you are over weight. Their body would not be able to take all of the toxins coming up all at once. They would die. Not from not eatting, but because of all the toxins. A healthy person and when I say health I mean a person who eats a diet of raw fruit and vegetables as their main staple everyday can live 60+ day without food.
