And You Thought I Was Done Talking About American Idol

Well I was, until this article landed on the newsdesk here at Big Fat Deal headquarters. Katharine "I Hope She's Not a Scientologist" McPhee has come clean about her struggles with bulimia.

"In a new interview with People magazine, the season five runner-up reveals that she struggled with severe bulimia for five years, bingeing and purging in a destructive cycle that could have permanently ruined her singing voice and caused devastating consequences to her health. At her worst, McPhee says she was making herself vomit up to seven times each day, which she equates to 'putting a sledgehammer to your vocal cords.'"

If I'm understanding the timeline, it seems that she went into a treatment facility once she found out she was going to be on the show. So this was a very recent struggle for her. It seems that celebrities don't come out about this kind of thing until years after the fact, so yay, Katharine.

Yeah it's a good point. Because Katharine McPhee is completely hot. I guess I'll start throwing up seven times a day!

But seriously, I don't know when the "right time" to go public is, but she's at her highest profile point now, and she says she wants to help her fans who may be struggling. I guess it depends on how cynical you are.

Cynic! Actually, she cancelled all of her scheduled interviews for today, according to IMDB news. So how does that fit, if she's publicity hungry?

I'm just freaked out because while she is GORGEOUS and in my opinion, not stick-thin but still thin, I kept seeing debates on sites like tvgasm over whether she was "fat" or "just overweight."

Wow, Kendra.

So size 0 (who made that up anyway?) is anorexic, and any size from "Katharine" to "Mandisa" is now officially fat.

*tunes out America so does not go stark raving yelling crazy*

So I guess the lesson here is do not ruin your beautiful smile or voice with bulimia, because bulimia will not help you avoid being called "fat".

Or "overweight".

(Although it may help your record sales.)

Whew.

This post is almost a month old, but I was reading the comments and wanted to mention something. I don't have an opinion on Katharine's situation, but I wanted to say to LunaWillowalker:

There are lots of theories on the reasons why but a lot of bulimics don't drop tremendous amounts of weight, or have a lot of up and downs even though they're getting rid of their food. I was bulimic for 3 years and definitely lost weight, but when i was put in a program and learned how to actually eat correctly, i continued to lose another 10 pounds during the time i was in the program and that was without exercising. This obviously isn't going to happen for those who are servely underweight or anything like that, but the lesson learned is that if you eat healthy, your body will find its proper weight. And that eating disorders don't necessarily get you there either.

Just wanted to put that out there because I didn't want people to read LunaWillowalker's comment and think incorrect things about eating disorders, be scared to enter a program for fear of gaining weight, or think bad things about Katharine McPhee perhaps unnecessarily.

I concur with anonymous above. I once was a 225 pound bulimic. It happens.

Bulimia is not just about throwing up. You also eat more than is required for your body. And if you end up eating more than you expend (whether through exercise...or other methods), you weigh more. Simple economics.

It's about an unhealthy relationship with your body. People can have this problem, and you would never know it. It doesn't have a certain "look." Which reminds me of Calista Flockhart. I don't know if she has an eating disorder or not, but let's say she was perpetually thin and can't seem to do anything about it (can we say hyperthyroid?). Poor her, with all those freaking people making comments all the time. A constant reminder that she will never be buxom. This is actually a problem that bothers some women, whether us larger gals like to accept it or not.

I personally agree with the anonymous people who have posted comments before me...I think that people who have bulimia sometimes don't show any symptoms at all. I don't think that Katharine would want to cover up her 30 lbs. weight loss with an eating disorder because it might give her more negative publicity than positive. If she really did go through a weight loss program, you would think that she would want to advertise it rather than hide it. What would make her want to hide it? Also, for those who say "sign me up for some bulimia" or "I guess I'll start throwing up seven times a day!", you are speaking more out of ignorance than knowledge. I say this because it's not easy to make yourself throw up, it takes its toll on your body and emotions, and only the people going through it know what its like to be bulimic.
