The Perfect Jeans for Your Plus-Size Figure

According to Ladies' Home Journal, anyway.

I never quite trust these articles that purport to teach you the magical secrets that slim you and elongate you and make you look like the virgin Queen of England if only you choose a rose-scented peplum, three boot-cut grapes and a clown on fire to draw the eye up, down and over towards the emerging Cuban democracy. Somehow, I don't believe anything in the world is going to fool people into thinking my butt is anything less than two hams in a pair of panties. Sexy hams, of course.

But they've got some very good tips regarding wash and cut, and of course, what's not to appreciate about the Where to Buy section? I always love a good list of plus sized resources. And a ham.

I really appreciate that the photograph accompanying the article was actually of a plus size (or at least not skinny) model. I can't stand when there are articles about "dressing slim" or what have you, that feature photographs of a model who couldn't not look slim no matter what she wears.

Hey, that was actually useful! Usually that kind of article has such rigid categories for dressing, and the implication is that you can only address one trait at a time. (So do I identify more as a tall person, or as a person with a gut? Where do thighs fit into all this?)

Though, although I liked the article, I don't think I've ever seen the butt that small high-up pockets looked good on. Just no on those.

I would also caution against one of the pieces of advice that the article suggests: in my experience, a high rise will NOT flatten a bulging belly! (The article recommends a mid-to-high rise to "flatten" a pudgy belly.) I have a belly that sticks out and a small waist. Any jeans that came up to, and fitted, my natural waist had to first go out and traverse the length of my belly, and then go in at my waist, thus highlighting the bulge. When I put on a pair of (very moderate) low-rise bootleg jeans, my belly disappeared. The ideal rise seems to be about two- fingers'-breadth below the belly button - it's just enough to avoid that swooping in that highlights and emphasises belly fullness.

I love the svoboda (spelling?) site, the models are real "plus" sized and still made up and posed like fashion models. There's also a dress called Monique, Mo has to have it.

This was a very good set of tips, I agree with JM, they didn't fall into the trap of assuming we are only dealing with one problem area.
