Applique Muumuus... And More!

Yesterday's edition of The Vine (and I will have to update that link as soon as today's goes up) has a list of places where an amply-cut woman might buy hot-looking clothes.

The day before that lists a bunch of places to get bras, and provides a link to Torrid. In the immortal words of Sarah Bunting: "Torrid actually seems to get that 'plus-sized' does not mean 'muumuu of shame,' which, seriously."

Seriously.

Have you come across Beauty Plus Power yet?

I was SHOCKED to go shopping last week in London, where five years ago my then-size 16 butt didn't fit into anything, and where now most boutique shops (equivalent of J. Crew, Banana Republic, etc.) were carrying 20s and 22s (US 18 and 20). Whoa!

I'm intrigued... Which shops were these? Were you talking US or UK size 16? And did you enjoy London?

It's true that more expensive "young fashion" shops like French Connection and Zara tend to stop at UK size 14 or thereabouts, and TopShop and Miss Selfridge (cheap and cheerful teen fashion) carry a few 16s but not in everything. However, in my experience there's an absolute divide: either shops stop at 14, or they go up to 22.

What annoys me more is that the letter sizes - S, M, L, XL - are pretty inconsistent. I'm an L or XL in Gap, but Zara's XL tops don't even nearly fit (it's well-known that they design for quite a boyish figure, however).

I am just beginning to fit into 14s again (sometimes) and bought a peasant skirt in Zara the other day. It's an L. I feel kind of like a traitor, though, as though I should boycott them until they acknowledge that girls can have hips and busts.

Let's see, I may not remember all of the names. Monsoon was one, Principles was another... And I was talking US size 16.

In the US, almost all boutique shops stop at US14, maybe 16 if you're lucky. The only exceptions are Gap and Old Navy (cheaper version of Gap), although a few smaller stores like J. Jill do have a wider range. But for all of them, the wider is best available by mail rather than in the shop. I'm so unused to being able to actually try things on!

And yes, London was fabulous.

Great site. My wife found a lot of interesting information here. Here's an account of me trying to find a size 14 (!) in a Beverly Hills mall.
