This editorial alerts us to the fact that Tyra Banks is the latest celebrity to put on a fat suit, to go "undercover" for her show. Tyra's website has pictures of her in the fat suit, and a description of the episode: "Witness Tyra’s extreme transformation, as she goes undercover as a 350-pound woman to see if people will treat her differently. She also speaks with overweight women who deal with weight related discrimination every day and goes on three blind dates to see how the men will react."

People are mean to FAT PEOPLE??? GROUNDBREAKING stuff, really!! And how empathetic that the beautiful Tyra would deign to be "ugly" and "fat" to see what it's REALLY LIKE for a Fat person to be in the world.
What will her producers come up with next? A show about how water is wet?
The woman cares, give her a break. Ok, she's thin, that doesn't mean that she doesn't care. She made alot more people realize what's going on in the world, if her show made one person more caring towards people of any size, then good for her and good for all of us!
I'm not so sure it was done because she cares so much. It's all about ratings, baby!
However, if it made just one person take a look in the mirror, then more power to her! And I don't mean the fat person. Hopefully some eyes were opened about attitudes toward the overweight.
It's probably not necessary for a model to put on a fat suit in order to "prove" that people who are overweight are not treated as well as, you know, people who are models, but even so, I find it hard to get too worked up about it.
Perhaps that's wrong of me, though, because I would be pretty offended if a white person got all made up in blackface in order to prove that racism exists.
Laura bora is right that it seems like doing the show at all is simply restating the obvious, but I think the way to lessen the problem is to call more attention to it. Whether she's doing it in the best way is debatable, but I think Tyra's heart is at least in the right place.
Tyra Banks is stupid. Did you see her reaction after she saw the way she was treated? She started bawling because of how horrible it was. Nobody even insulted her really, nobody was going around calling her "fatass".
Besides, at the end of the day, she got to take that suit off and be a supermodel. She doesn't really know what it's like to be a regular person. If she had been done up to look like an average housewife/mother of 3 she would have reacted the same way.
It seems people are unreasonably critical of celebrities. Tyra Banks did a show (motivated by empathy, or ratings... who knows, but who cares) to bring attention to a problem. And she did that. So who gives a shit if she gets to go back to being a supermodel? Or if it is an obvious problem. Maybe its not so obvious to some people. Maybe its easy to forget how your actions or your words can come across to real people. Sometimes we place a stigma on someone and put them in this "other" category and all the sudden they aren't a real person to us. It's ridiculous that it takes Tyra Banks in a fat suit to make people realize that, but welcome to a ridiculous world. Not to mention the fact that, ironically, now that Tyra has gained a few pounds, people are being horrible to her. They ARE calling her a fatass and porkchop and all kinds of terrible things. God bless her for embracing it. Even if you have a high self esteem, it must be difficult to maintain that with everyone in the world pointing at you and calling you fat because you are a celebrity. Her being a supermodel and standing up and saying she is happy with how she looks, rather than saying she is on a diet plan, is I think huge for our society to hear.

I am a huge fan of Tyra Bank. She is the most realistic person I have ever known. Tyra Bank is real in front of the camera and behind the camera. So what if she gain a few pounds; “So what For the Last Time”! Tyra has proven to everyone: after being a super model she does not have to keep this image that the entire world wants her to be. Tyra is a beautiful African American Woman that opens the door for the curvy and voluptuous woman’s out there.
Thank You, Thank You, Thank you Tyra for being who you are. You can call her names all you want to, but I for myself would want to be in her shoes fat or no fat at all.

I am a police officer in Ohio and see these types of "slam" all the time. I can assure you that if you look into the household of the person that took that photo, you would find an obese person there.However, do you see that photo on the front page. This is another way of trying to bring a successful person down. Keep your head up Tyra. Hooper

So here's the real deal-The people who are critisizing Tyra for putting on a fat are people who are over-weight but do nothing about it. They are the ones that sit on their lazy butts-eating McDonalds and cake all day long. I myself have had a weight problem but I have a fiance who is like Tyra banks-Beautiful inside and out. My fiance doesn't care that I have gained weight, as long as I try to eat healthier and push myself to make an effort to loosing weight. I am comfortable with my weight and Tyra (whether or not she did this for ratings) made an effort to do something, to change the outlook on life for Fat people to be happpy with who they are and Skinny people to feel the emotional problems faced with being Fat. She made the effort - so for those of you who critisized her, when was the last time you made the effort to do anything - except to get off that couch.
I think some people have missed Tyra's point with the fat suit and her reaction to the tabloid picture. She is at a healthy weight and she's being called fat. I believe what she's saying is that it's ok for women or men to be heavier than what society and the media sees acceptable. We all are not going to be tall and weigh 90 pounds.

Officer Willie Hooper has some nerve acting as if he never puts women down. He thinks he is god's gift to women but he is the total opposite. I have a child by Willie and we do not get along at all, he tries to put me down by calling me a fat ass bitch all the time, but I just blow it off obviously he is not happy with himself is why he feels the need to try & dog me. He can never break me because I know who & what I am! Yes I am fat, so what is your point, do you feel better now that you called me names? The only way you can feel better about yourself is to change your ways! which will never happen!
