And Now A Word From Our Sponsors

This is just to say that Bizrate is a fantastic place to comparison shop, that eDiets.com is a helpful option for online weight loss, and that I have eaten the plums that were in the icebox.

Thanks to Bizrate for continuing to support Big Fat Deal, and thanks so very much to all of you for stopping by every day! Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

I have to say I am disappointed at who your sponsors are. Today was the first time visiting your blog, and your sponsors were one of the first things I noticed. I am fully supportive of what your blog seems to be doing. Calling "attention to issues of weight in the media, pop culture and society" is obviously important-- which is why you're writing this blog and why I'm reading it. But maybe I'm mistaken about your mission.

By addressing the issue of fat phobia and having the media and society constantly telling us that we need to look a certain way or be a certain size, you're kind of giving in to all of those messages you seem to be battling by endorsing a weight loss program whose second survey question is: your body type is: a) needs help b) average c)muscular. So, if I'm not muscular or "average," (whatever that means) my body "must need help?"

Just wanted to encourage you to really think about who you want to be your sponsor. Is endorsing weight loss really the way you want to go? I'm all about supporting healthy living, but focusing on weight loss doesn't exactly do that.

What kind of message are you sending to your audience who looks to you for commentary and support about loving bodies of all sizes? Weight loss messages are shoved in our faces every day. I had hoped your blog would be one place to escape them.

Hey Cyndi,

Your concerns are definitely concerns of mine as well, but let me address some of them.

Bizrate isn’t a weight loss product or anything of that nature; it’s a shopping comparison site, and I use it all the time. You can search for fitness equipment, as their text ad suggests, but you can also shop for anything else under the sun through that link.

I didn't see that question on the eDiets profile, and I do agree that it's badly worded. I personally am on the South Beach Diet at the moment, which has improved my overall health, and I don’t think that all "diets" are bad or evil. Having an eDiets link doesn’t bother me, for that reason. But I will take a look at that profile page and get back to you, because that does bother me.

Finally, I know that the Google ads are often about weight loss products, but those are generated automatically based on the words used most frequently on the site. If you click on individual entries, you can sometimes get more specifically targeted ads that are about other things.

I hope that answers or addresses this comment.
