Big Fat Carnival

A ton of thought and work clearly went into the first Big Fat Carnival, and there are some truly awesome posts over there. It's a collection of almost 50 posts divided into categories such as "Our Fat-Hating Culture" and "Fat, Gender and Feminism."Just a random sample:

"Here’s what we mean when we say food is gendered. Women are expected to want salads, vegetables, fancy chocolates, and sweet alcoholic drinks with umbrellas in them. Men are expected to want slabs o’ meat, potatoes, apple pie, and beer or hard liquor. Women are expected to comment in restaurants on the size of the portion and the presentation of the food before they take a bite. Men are expected to dig in."

This one's from Body Impolitic. And no doubt among all those many posts you'll find plenty to agree with, disagree with, and discuss.

Well, it's true that I could count the male vegetarians I know on the thumb of one hand. And in our house (6 inhabitants), there is a perfect split between vegetarian women and meat-eating men. But apart from that... possibly the men I know best have been forcibly educated about nutrition by the women around them, but I don't think the split is particularly pronounced. It does exist, though.

(I'm not counting the time my brother decreed that chocolate is a fruit and therefore counts as one of your five daily portions.)

No, no, no. Chocolate comes from beans and is therefore a legume!

You'd think, wouldn't you? But my bro is a medical student and insists that he is right... ;)

It's a "natural antidepressant", so it's required for me!

Actually that is true, it stimulates serotonin production, and some ingredients in chocolate metabolize to tryptophan, which makes you sleepy and relaxed, that's why it "feels good" to eat! I had a cognitive science professor who handed out little Hersheys Kiss chocolates in the exams, calling them Emergency Tryptophan Precursors. During exams we were to hold up our hands in a T shape to indicate we were in dire need of chocolate.
