Oprah and Martha and Trump, Oh My!
This judgy guy over here talking about Oprah reminded me of somthing I saw in a magazine the other day. But first let's hear from Mr. Judgy:
"Oprah obviously doesn't have any discipline when it comes to her nutritional and exercise habits. She may have great taste in clothes and books... but she has terrible taste in all things fitness and nutrition. And looking back at her life-long weight and body image ordeal she displays many of the classic signs of a person who has an eating disorder."
Don't fuck with Oprah, dude. With a snap of her fingers, she can eradicate you from the earth. But anyway, one of the trashy magazines that my gym subscribes to had an article about Oprah and Martha Stewart and how they've gained weight lately, and a whole list of reasons why (Martha's show didn't do well! Oprah is stressed out by James Frey!) with accompanying pictures, you know how it is.
All I could think was that there's no Donald Trump weight watch, or obsessive photos of Dr. Phil. Powerful, successful men are not questioned about their weight. On the other hand, Martha and Oprah are powerful, successful women, and yet they have these insulting articles written on a regular basis, examining their body weight as if it's news. It pisses me off.
And as for Mr. "Oprah doesn't have any discipline," he can kiss my ass. Oprah, like most of us, is just doing the best she can.

Excellent point! I totally agree!
Dr. Phil also makes a boatload of money telling other people how to lose weight and be healthy.
Martha Stewart does food, crafts, plants, and decorating. Not weight loss.
I whole heartedly agree that the criticisms of Oprah and Martha and the lack of criticisms of Dr. Phil are gender-based. Trump gets mocked so much for the toupe that I'll leave him alone.
"since Oprah has set herself up as an authority on the subject of weight loss"
No, she hasn't. She is just sharing her struggles with the rest of us, like Mo said.
IMO? Judgy Dude is just way jealous because unlike Oprah and Martha (and The Donald, truth be told) he cannot make/break careers -- AND he does not have 50 kazillion dollars.
Suffer, judgy dude.
Plus, more OT? I'd be real interested to see his *ahem* physique -- and even if you have 50 kazillion dollars and are Oprah (or Martha or The Donald), you still have to make room in your schedule for your workouts, and I don't think the Universe approved any exemption so they get more hours in a day than the rest of us (although I'm sure at least one of them has staff working on it).
Just sayin'.
Richard, I didn't quite follow you. Why was Stewart held to a higher standard about the insider trading? And Dr. Phil has totally been pushing his weight management plan and products, yet I don't see people scrutinizing his still plus-sized body. I think Dr. Phil is due much more criticism than Oprah. Much more.
I was going to say that exact thing, that other commenters have been pointing out. I don't think Oprah has made money off of weight loss or telling people the "right" way to do anything. She's just been honest about her ongoing struggle, and I think that's awesome.
Dr. Phil has touted himself as a "weight loss guru" and has been pudgy the whole time! I've never seen his picture in Star, though.
I'd buy the defenses of the double standard more readily if I didn't feel so strongly that Stewart had been pilloried for being a successful WOMAN. Sure, CEO's should be held to higher standards than penny-ante investors (or non-investors) like me...but where's Ken Lay these days? What happened to him? I suppose it's remotely possible he's rotting in Lorton, but a) I doubt it, and b) why is no one telling us about it again and again and again, the way every aspect of the Stewart trial and punishment was obsessively noted? Lay's crimes were infinitely more devastating and severe than Stewart's, but he's been allowed to fade into obscurity; no one seems to care that he's impoverished so many for pure greed. Tom DeLay, another guy who's having troubles because he talks the talk but doesn't walk the walk...I suppose it's possible that he too will be someone's love slave in a federal prison one of these days, but a) anyone seen any sign of it? and b) where's the news about HIS indictment and trial? It lasted all of about a week. Or let's take our pal Hillary, of whom I approve but whom even I wouldn't want to be the Democratic Party's death-wish du jour. Hillary Clinton's apparently so widely hated that it boggles the mind, she has a reputation as a castrating bitch...and for what? For her health plan not working out? Many another health plan has failed to appeal, and we don't even remember the authors of those plans. For being a first lady whose interests ran outside the acceptable "nurturing" projects? For handling her husband's screwups with grace and reticence? So, to return to weight, yeah, Dr. Phil may have lost a few pounds, but he doesn't take anything like the heat Oprah does for not having lost more; he's a success, she's a failure. Women are castigated for being large; but if they're not large, they're castigated for being controlling and obsessive. Can we just admit that in weight and finance and intellectual capital and politics and all too many other arenas, the real crime is being female? Kind of makes you want to go put your head in a pie.
"Can we just admit that in weight and finance and intellectual capital and politics and all too many other arenas, the real crime is being female?"
Yes.
