OTC vs. WLS

I always like to direct you to interesting debates in the comments, and while there are always a lot of good comments being posted in prior posts, the current hot discussion is right here. Susan writes:

It seems to me that some people tend to recoil in horror at the thought of dealing with poop, but will gladly sign up for major, life-altering surgery. (And from my reading, WLS patients can also have problems with "dumping".) I've suggested to quite a few people that they should at least give Xenical an honest trial before opting for WLS, but they won't hear of it.

So what do you think of medications like Orlistat and Xenical as an alternative to surgery?

Honestly, I couldn't do either option. The idea of putting my body through that much strain whether elective surgery or poop-inducing meds makes me uncomfortable. I'm old-fashioned so I'd rather eat right, do exercise I like, and learn to love the skin I'm in. Besides, don't many WLS patients regain some of the weight or have serious complications? That alone would stop me.

(Great blog, by the way--longtime reader, first time poster!)

Personally, I won't do either, either. And I don't really get how the Xenical, etc drugs can help you long term. Weight loss isn't about the amount of fat you absorb, it's about the amount of calories you eat.

Jaime, Xenical absorbs 1/3 of the calories from fat that you eat. So if you ate, for example, something with 60 calories from fat, the Xenical would absorb 20 of those calories. In the long term, it helps you to change your food preferences. I have completely lost the taste for potato wedges with sour cream!
