Catholic Schoolgirls Rule

Although I went to Catholic school (those cute little plaid skirts) I think having fashionable plus-sized clothing for kids is a good thing. Certainly we shouldn't encourage significant child overweight, but low self-esteem is poison to weight loss. We should fight the battle in the cafeteria and in nutrition class, not by making kids wear ill-fitting, unfortunate-looking clothes.

On the other hand, I sort of wish clothes weren't divided into "plus-sized" and "juniors" or whatever it is these days. Why can't there just be clothes in various sizes with no line drawn between being "regular" and being "fat"? I do feel bad for the kids who will have to experience the shame of plus-sized shopping, although cute clothes do help take the sting out of it a bit.

Of course I am also in favor of kids wearing uniforms to school so that the whole emphasis on fashion is avoided entirely, but that's another soapbox.

Please stop reading my mind!

I was in Target the other day, browsing through clothes while the Husband shopped for work shirts, and not for the first time I wondered: why are my size of clothes in a special Plus Size section??? Why aren't they just on a rack with the others? What is the philosophical or functional difference between a 12 and a 14 that requires one of those sizes to be shunted off to the side? Are fat people so stupid we won't be able to find it otherwise? Are thin people so petty they won't buy clothes if they also exist in a larger size? I notice the men's clothes weren't arranged that way; XXL is on the same rack as S.

Re Junior sizes: back in the day, when I was young, there really was a difference in the types of sizes. Juniors (odd sizes) were basically intended for teenagers - females who hadn't achieved their full growth - and slimmer body-types. Misses sizes (even numbers) were for young (and short) women with curvier bodies (the age has to do with the style of clothing, there was more age differentiation in clothes then). And Women's sizes were just for... women. Now I don't know what the heck the sizes mean, but definitely I've never fit a Junior size in my life, and don't expect to.

I'll never forget how humiliating it was to shop from the special section of the Sears catalog. Every kid in the neighborhood got their clothes from that catalog, so they all recognized the "Chubby" wardrobe I had.

I agree about the whole "seperate clothes for plus size people" thing. It annoys the hell out of me. I have actually heard someone working in fashion say that it's because consumers should feel "rewarded" for being thin. Like, "I've worked this hard to stay a size three, so I deserve to wear Gucci. A fat person doesn't." Talk about associating weight and morality! I'm annoyed that the new Isaac Mizrahi stuff at Target only comes in regular sizes. At least the Mossimo line comes in plus sizes, but even there, some things aren't available. I saw these adorable thin t-shirts for layering in regular sizes. When I went to the plus size section, there were t-shirts already layered and sewn together, much cheaper looking, much less versatile. Growl. (Speaking of this, lately I've seen some Tommy Hilfiger Plus Sized stuff... unless I missed it, that was introduced without much fanfare!) - Blaise (astralounge.diaryland.com)

I'll tell you what else pisses me off - Isaac Mizrahi is not exactly SVELTE himself (or wasn't the last time I saw him). Where is he buying HIS clothes? Not from the Big 'n Tall shop, I'll bet.

I have to admit, one of the biggest triumphs of my weight loss so far is being able to shop in 'normal' stores. (In Canada, most fashion retailers have little to no plus size clothing and so there are one or two retailers that cater only to plus sized women)

It's humiliating to be shopping with friends and sit twiddling your thumbs while the size twos look through racks and you know that nothing in the entire store would fit you.

I find it SO disturbing that there's an idea that providing clothing that actually looks and feels good on bigger kids might make them FORGET for a moment that they're overweight. God forbid they feel nice about themselves and how they look, just the way they are, for a moment - lest they not remember that they are big fat pigs who, physically, are all wrong. As if life's not fucking tough enough for fat kids. I should know - I was one.

Marla

You should just stop eating.

That doesn't even make any sense. What does her stopping eating have to do with anything?

those catholic school uniforms are unflattering for fat people to wear. while skinny girls wear their kilts in mid thigh length, fat girls have to wear them long to cover their thighs and the overall look is very bulky. I think those uniforms are stupid and anyway, they are in a lot of porn.
