Maybe The Pilot Will Suck

Really, anything could happen to a script in development. Still, I wonder about this show, just given a green light:

"...the untitled Paula Pell project, written by Pell, centers on a formerly fat woman who struggles as she grows into her new skin while surrounded by her still-overweight family and friends."

It's a comedy, written by an SNL staff writer. It seems sort of high-concept, but there is a definite danger of the Fat Monica thing happening here. And the premise confuses me a little bit-- they're not saying that every single one of her family and friends is fat, right? Does she live in a town called Fatville?

It sounds like the show will be used to make the fat people she interacts with stereotypically fat. Like urging her to take many servings and go to eat at all-u-can-eat place. It sounds like the "joke" is in the "dealing with fat people" part. I don't know. Maybe I'm totally misreading it but that's what it sounds like to me.

Of course, Hollywood being what it is, those still-elephantine friends and family (well, the female ones, anyway) will be roughly size 12-14.

I had to post on this... I've read (most of) the script for the Paula Pell project, and it's the BEST sitcom script I've ever read. Very, very funny and very smart - I laughed out loud 8 or 9 times while reading it, which, if you've read many sitcom scripts, you'll know is extremely rare. I'm in the running for one of the series regulars, as one of the "still overweight" people, and I can tell you that, refreshingly, the main (now skinny) character is portrayed as being the one with lots of issues, while her still-heavy but "attractive and confident" sister is the one with her sh*t together. I predict that "normal" sized women will rejoice and love this show, if it makes it to air. Watch for it!

As a plus sized person close to Ms. Pell I am so sad to see that everyone always assumes that her show would have been making fun of "fat" people. I am very happy to see that Anonymous #2 was willing to at least give it the credit it deserves. Thick and Thin was a well written tv sit com that society can't handle. The people that run TV land can handle and air everything from gays to animal abuse but being fat is still not accepted.
In the test markets Thick and Thin rated higher that some shows that got aired on NBC during the same pilot season and yet NBC won't even "burn" her episodes and air them anywhere. They would rather they sit on the shelves at the NBC vault than sell them to someone else......even Lifetime can't have it.
God forbid that the show become a hit on someone elses network. Has anyone at NBC ever heard of "the biggest loser"? The studio store at NBC in NYC is selling hats, t'shirts, books and has a large window display. And we were told that there was no place for Thick and Thin on this network. I am just thankful that someday when my niece and nephew are older I can proudfully show them the six funny, intelligent, and respectful episodes of Thick and Thin that we have. I wish you all could see them as well!
