Mouth-Breathing Men Fear Smart Women

Maxim Magazine (that bastion of cultural commentary) decided to rank the "10 most unattractive women on TV." [editor's note: it appears to have been since yanked from the site. interesting] I fully expected the list to be populated with fat women, but their press release pegged Rosie O'Donnell as "too obvious" a choice. In fact, although they did call Pam Grier "keg-like" (which, whatever, that's "Pam motherfuckin' Grier" to you), the list wasn't about fat women at all. Instead, it was just weird. As Celebritology puts it:

"I can only conclude that they must've been going for subtle, inner unattractiveness here. That doesn't explain, though, why the list is made up of a non-nonsensical mix of fictional characters (Peggy Hill, Jerri Blank, Ugly Betty, Calamity Jane) and real women (Christiane Amanpour, Fran Drescher, Tina Yothers, Pam Grier -- Pam Grier?!? -- Tina Fey, Nancy Grace). No mention is made, by the way, that the actresses behind Jerri Blank and Ugly Betty -- Amy Sedaris and America Ferrera -- are not only knockouts, but ridiculously talented."

You said it, sister. Also, considering that they included not one but two CNN news anchors as well as Tina Fey, I think the real message here is obvious.

What was more interesting than the piece itself was (and this is usually the case) the comments. My favorite:

Maybe they should simply retitle the piece "Women Who Threaten Our Trembling Manhood Because They Are Smarter, Earn More, and Are Funnier...and Do It All in Really Cute Shoes".

But here's the really interesting thing: three times (as of 1:21 cdt 10/02) Maxim's editors have sought to post, defending themselves and choosing to trash people even more. That argues strongly for the whole "being threatened" thing.

Practically every man I know finds Tina Fey really hot and her intelligence sexy rather than threatening. Apparently Maxim writers are a lesser breed.

Tina Fey? No frickin' way!!! Also Fran Drescher, who deserves extra points on any shallow rating scale for never aging. Why aren't there any women gross enough to put out lists like this? Or are there? I'd like to nominate Bill O'Reilly.

Mary, I'll see your Bill O'Reilly and raise you a passel of Maxim editors. I'll just bet they're a lissome, toothsome bunch.

Let’s start with the fact that they have NO taste and have clearly seen none of the movies that are cultural markers over the years (“Jackie Brown” and “Spinal Tap”,anyone? Even guys watch those films; I’m not talking about “chick flicks” – much as I LOATHE that term, I think it serves to prove the point.)

Fran Drescher and Pam Grier. With those bodies. And that skin. Ummm-hmmmm. Ooooookay.

Re: America Ferrera and “Ugly Betty”, this is a site quote from these Cro-Magnons:
“We haven’t seen the show yet and, frankly, are too lazy to dig up the name of the actress who inhabits the titular role.”

Right. Never mind that the magazine featured her after her last role. Who are they hiring to write these things, 12 year olds who have never before been let out of the house?!?

Their next slide show category is “Ball Apologies”. Sounds like it’s something they’d need to offer after perpetrating this atrocity.

Plus, the fact that they’ve decided to conflate cartoon and real women in one category –- not to mention the fact that they freely admit to their own laziness like it’s some kind of latent slimeball virtue -- tells me that this caliber (or lack thereof) of male pretty much views women one-dimensionally only.

And Mo, you’ve nailed it – the common denominator with all these women is that they all have a clue, which shows us what we’re really dealing with here.
