A Girl Can Dream
Another article about employment discrimination against the overweight. It does have the usual depressing statistics about the overweight being fired more often and paid less and "we don't want a fat receptionist" and all that. However, there is a small ray of hope:
"When two competing candidates are equally qualified, often it is not their appearance that ultimately hurts the overweight candidate, it is his or her self-confidence...if a candidate is really outstanding, their size will not be an issue."
It would be nice to think that the discrimination isn't as bad as we fear, and that we are the only people who stand in our own way, wouldn't it? Who knows, maybe it's even true. Thanks to Kari for the tip.

Confidence is key, as well as dressing stylishly and appropriately. If you go in like a mouse, you'll hurt your chances, but if you go in like a lioness, then you have a fighting chance.
I'd like to believe this. But then I see things like this
Mr. Viscusi was more blunt. “When I’m interviewing someone and I see their bones protruding, I know it’s a good hire,” he said. “They’re extremely disciplined.”
How many HR people think this way and just never say it out loud?
Yeah, and I am willing to bet Mr. Viscusi wasn't talking about MEN with "protruding bones," either.

You know, I've been overweight for the majority of my adult life, up until now (and i'm still overweight, I'm just not morbidly obese like I used to be), and I will say, with certainty, that the difference between me and an obese candidate that didn't get the job, was that I was extremely confident.
Ahem, this is also because i was in total denial about my weight (Hey, I didn't look in mirrors, so maybe they couldn't tell I was fat either!), but it seems to have worked in my advantage, as while I might not have had romantic success as a heavy woman, I have always had plenty of career success.
