Wanna Be On Top
Tonight! The premiere of season 8 of American's Next Top Model, the show that has nothing at all to do with the real modeling industry in any way whatsoever.
I am excited for this season, because there is not one, but two plus size models joining the hopefuls, and maybe somehow, being together and having each other to eat ham with will stop the usual plus-sized model's fate on this show, wherein she goes from being praised for her spirit and beauty to being told she has lost her "spark," after spending weeks living with 11 skinny girls and not fitting into designers' clothes and being hated by photographers.
Maybe this time, the plus size girls will stage a coup. Viva las booties! Should be a pip.
What do you think? Will they make it past the early weeks?

Considering the fact that Tyra has been getting shit from the media lately for being "FAT", I reckon they will get a lot further along, but still won't win. I will eat me socks if one of them wins!
It would be great if Tyra maybe even made a point of saying, This time we're doing things a little differently around here. However, from the ads I've seen it looks like more of the same. I guess she can only buck the system so much, and since her "fat" is in no way real world fat, I don't hold out too much hope of a plus size model coming that close to winning.
On a side note, does anything ever actually happen with the girl who wins top model? Is she ever heard from again? I mean except for Adrianne Curry who married Peter Brady.
Anne, if that dynamic--being amongst 11 skinny girls--could break Tocarra's spirit, it could happen to anyone (and that stylist who foisted the parking attendant's outfit on her: suh-hucked). I hope these two plus contestants get taken seriously and are not just fodder. Last night's judging didn't bode so well for either of them, though.
Also, I can't decide if there's a "spark" double standard. I know personality is an issue for all contestants, but it seems like the plus contestants are asked to project more spark, while the thin ones seem to be evaluated to a greater degree based on their physical attributes.
I used to watch America's Next Top Model, but I don't anymore. As you pointed out, they always find some reason to eliminate the plus-size contestants. I think fat-phobia is so rampant in the fashion industry, it's going to require intervention (maybe 'divine' intervention) to turn things around. In the meantime, I'm glad there are pageants for plus-size models and Mo'Nique's Fat Chance. My hope is that designers who specialize in plus-size clothing will start receiving some attention during New York & L.A.'s Fashion Week events. So far, those designers have been ignored.
I'm trying to remain optimistic, but it's an uphill battle and I don't know if the 'curvy' women of the world are ready to take up the cause.

Eva gets jobs.
And in a sweep of irony over which I continually gloat, Toccara made the cover of King magazine (they could have chosen a different pose though) and has a hosting gig on BET 106 & Park.
