Elizabeth Hurley Still Sucks

Well we all hate Elizabeth Hurley anyway, for her "I would kill myself if I were as fat as Marilyn Monroe" comment and all her remarks about losing her baby weight. But the latest jewel from the tongue of Ms. Hurley will reinvigorate your hate, in case you'd let it slide. When asked what fashion she would ban, she said:

"Anything that is too small or too tight, unless you're slim and toned. I'm sick of seeing flab bulging out all over."

It makes me want to put on some size-two spandex and have a fat parade in front of her house.

I agree that that was a horrible thing to say, and who asked for her opinion, anyway?

On the other hand, I wore jeans that were as tight as I could get into for much of the nineties, under the misguided impression that they'd make me look thinner, and now I wonder quite what I was thinking. I rather suspect that all the slightly apple-shaped girls who currently wear hipster trousers and tummy-clinging T-shirts may look back in a few years and conclude that that wasn't a very good look, either.

That isn't to say that Liz Hurley, or anyone else has a right to tell them not to wear them, however (and maybe I'm just jealous because I can't wear hipster jeans myself - I have a long body and a big bum!)

Wait, Monroe had a 22 inch waist? That's freakishly small for her other measurements. No wonder all her clothes were custom made. That's a size 4 bottom (with a tightly cinched belt!) and a size 8 top according to JC Penney.

And yeah, Hurley is full of herself, but I got distracted by the numbers.

Don't beat me for this, but though her phrasing is horrible, I kind of see her point.

I know that I look better when I buy the jeans or the dress that fits me rather than the one that has the number I am comfortable with. Everyone does. Nothing calls attention to areas that need improvement like straining fabric or screaming seams. However, I think that even the thin and toned should not wear too tight clothing, it still looks too tight, not matter how small their ass is.

Of course, Liz and I have different ideas, I would push for someone who is barely squeezing into a 12 to go to a 14 whereas she would be horrified those numbers existed.

On second thought, though I defended her, I kind of want to kick her. Is that okay?

That's pretty much what I feel, MM!

Although I would never, ever tell someone that I thought they should go up a size. I'd be devastated if someone said that to me.

Well, Elizabeth Hurley is definitely a snot...but she has a point. I am the first person to stand up for the rights of fat people (since I am one!) but when I see a fat girl wearing something that makes her body bulge out everywhere, I am totally grossed out. She has a right to wear it, yes, but unattractive is unattractive.

Let me clear something up here for everyone, because I am a dressmaker. Marilyn's measurements correspond to today's size 8 with a freakishly small waist. Even if they are exaggerated smaller by a couple inches, which in case you didn't know, is standard practice for anyone who is in a position to have their measurements known publicly, she still comes in well below a 12 any way you slice it.

This aside, I actually saw one of Marilyn's dresses on display to be auctioned at Sotheby's, and it was tiny. The waist was so tiny, it made the hips appear to flare absurdly, however, it was smaller than any dress I've ever worn and I am an ex- 6 and her height.

Marilyn was exquiste and enchanting.
Hurley is just this week's Best Tits or something by some men's magazine poll. Although I hear she is a shrewd businesswoman.

Oh come on! She is absolutelly right. I am fed up with fat women wearing tight clothes, or even worse exposing their belly. This is unnacceptable and there should be laws who prohibit fat women doing this (please respect other people's aisthetics!). If you are fat it is probably your choice. If you could choose your appearance what would you choose? Fat or Slim?

I find skinny women who dress slutty equally as irritating. Maybe more so, because they have so many good fashion options available to them. And Hurley's one to talk. Everything she's ever seen in exposes most of her her engorged and veiny nursing breasts, cantilevered into a weird butt-formation under her chin...gross. Cover those baby bottles please, in the name of the decency you hold so dear.

I am so damn sick of people like her talking about women with weight on them. Not everyone is rich and can afford to have a trainer, and a nany. Most real women give to their families before making time for themselves, believe me Ive been a 118lbs. I put my self first and everything else second, I was the most miserable woman in the world, and yes men thought I was beautiful but they treated me like shit! Now that Ive gained weight due to a stroke and depression, I have gained more respect for myself and am much happier, because I am not a selfish acting bitch like her. I think a woman can be beautiful no matter what her size. Why in this day and age are people so stupid to judge others beauty by weight? it makes me sick!

I think that people should stop insulting Elizabeth Hurley and others for speaking their minds. What is with all the venom? Are you any better than the people you criticize when you attack them like that? There are plenty of civilized, classy ways to say you don't agree with someone.

In addition, what is so terrible about saying that being overweight is not a good thing? It is not natural, it is not healthy, and I'm sorry, but it is not attractive. There is a reason other countries laugh at Americans; in fact, when I was in Germany, the first thing Germans (mostly thin people) would say when they heard I am American was "Fett!" (Fat!) Is that what you want people to think of you? Yes, our lifestyles are very hectic, but there is no reason not to take care of yourself. Eat well, no matter what you have to do to make that happen, exercise, and remember that being thin is not just about beauty; it's also about taking care of yourself. A woman's body was never meant to carry around excess baggage; instead, she was designed to have an hourglass figure. That is how others know she is healthy and looks after herself.

Before you start attacking me, just think about this: whom do you find more attractive, Brad Pitt or John Candy? Jennifer Aniston or Roseanne? Be honest.

That's odd because I'd heard the exact opposite thing about Germany. I was considering studying abroad there one semester and mentioned it to an obese girl I was doing a group project with. She said it was awesome because over there men would actually check her out and hit on her. I was actually a little bummed when I never ended up going because I was looking forward to getting some hot German lovin'.

Blogger Jennette Fulda said...

Oh and another thing, not all women are supposed to have an hourglass figure. An hourglass figure is when "bust and hips are basically the same circumference and the waist is 9" or more smaller than the bust." Even if I weighed 100 pounds, I do not have the breasts for an hourglass figure and I never will without cosmetic surgery.

As far as saying women's bodies shouldn't carry around "excess baggage," that's not true either. Women have more body fat than men, particularly in their thighs and butt because they need it if they become pregnant. So we actually do come with a bigger baggage compartment than men.

And finally "[a woman] was designed to have an hourglass figure. That is how others know she is healthy and looks after herself." That's not true either. Just because you're thin doesn't mean you're healthy, it just means you're thin. I read a blog entry by a thin friend of mine who is scared to go work out with her classmates because they're going to realize how out of shape she is even though she looks really hot. Right now I weigh at least 100 pounds more than her, but I workout 5 days a week, so I know I'm in better shape than her, hourglass figure or not.

The latest on La Liz is that she now refuses to wear a bikini.

And...As someone who has traveled in Germany over a lifetime, eaten and cooked my share of German food, I can assure you that there have been and still are many heavy Germans. The traditional German diet is full of beer, cheese, sausage, patés, pastas, dumplings, potato salads, stuffed meats, and chocolate, not mention many varieties of scrumptious pastries. Now I will point out that Germans, like most Europeans, walk and bike more than Americans so they burn it off. But for many decades, they have the idea that food is to be enjoyed.

The Germans that "anonymous" encountered were probably from the younger generation who have absorbed American ideas about body image and weight through the media and have adapted American attitudes about food. For example, the last time I was there, I watched South Park auf Deutsch and it was one of many episodes in which the kids were ripping into Cartman's weight.

Guess what kind of impact that will make on young, impressionable minds?

And the road between Brad Pitt and John Goodman is a looong one, filled with many different types.

I like Liz Hurley but that comment of hers was out of line. She's a pretty girl...however, there are many overweight & slim women out there who have body-image problems and that comment is very hurtful to fat people. People should put some thought into what they say before they say it. I'm very slim with the so-called "hourglass" shape but I would never look down on a woman who has a different body type or heavier weight.

That being said, I'll admit that it sometimes looks unpleasant when a very overweight woman flaunts herself in ill-fitting skimpy clothes. If a heavy woman wants to show off her figure, there are ways of playing up her assets & downplaying the parts that really don't need to be seen by the public. If you're overweight but have a nice cleavage, then show it off with a tasteful low neckline. If you have nice calves then you could wear a knee-length skirt in a loose and flowy (not clingy) material, and wear some sexy heels. Don't avoid bright colors if that's what you like. Be confident. Big women can be beautiful, too, but there is nothing worse than wearing clothes that don't fit well or are too small or inappropriate for your body type. People look most attractive when they wear comfortable, well-made clothes that fit well. No one has a "perfect" body, no one is "perfect", but it is important to take care of yourself and look good...no matter what size you might be. Beauty comes in all sizes, shapes, and colors.

What bothers me is when people mistakenly claim that Marilyn Monroe was a size 12, 14, 16, or even 18. That claim is incorrect. Her weight often went up & down like most women during the course of her career. However, at the time of her death she weighed 117 pounds. She went up to 140 very briefly while pregnant but after miscarrying, went back down to her normal weight, between 120-130 pounds. That can hardly be called a plus-sized woman. Her clothes were made by European designers and they were vintage sizes. Sizes in Europe differ vastly from those in America. A size 14 or 16 back then, many years ago, was not what it is now. Marilyn was only 5'5" and if she were a size 16, that would have been a lot of weight to carry on a woman of that height, whereas a size 16 on a 5'10" body looks more proportionate. Jayne Russell would probably be a size 12-14 in modern-day society because she was taller & had a much fuller figure than Marilyn, if you watch "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes". Mae West would have been close to a size 18 in today's world.

She might not have been narrow-hipped & emaciated like the actresses today, but she was a slim woman. She had an itty-bitty waist. She had curvy hips, but not huge. She had a very small frame and was not very tall, either. She was actually a 34C in breast size, not a 36D as the media billed her to be. She was bigger than Audrey Hepburn, of course, but she was still slender. She had some baby fat on her but that doesn't mean she was heavy. A woman can be slim but with natural curves & shape. In terms of vintage clothing sizes, she was a size 12, 14, or 16...but not like the women of today. Her size 12 (or 14, or 16) would most likely be a size 6-8 today. Maybe a size 10 but that might be pushing it. Her size isn't really important though. She was a beautiful woman! *smiles*

Marilyn Monroe got up to a size 16, from what I've read and soooo many people still remember her as the most beautiful blonde bombshell of her day. She is an icon of her era. I have never read anything about Marilyn Monroe making any kind of stereotypical statements about other people. But Elizabeth Hurley, though very thin and beautiful is only a movie star and will never be the icon that Marilyn is... Having said that, Marilyn Monroe also never had any kind of plastic surgery to enhance her beauty, and didn't need it! I don't agree with Liz's statement about Marilyn, but I do agree that people who are overweight shouldn't wear things that causes their fattness to bulge. If you wear the right size, you will appear thinner and not have an unattractive bulging look. It isn't really healthy to be TOO much overweight, but a little pudge can be quite endearing on women for men. Being underweight can also not be healthy and can be very unnattractive either way you go. But then again, there are men who are attracted to morbidly obese women, and also skelletally underweight women. People come in all kinds of packages. The important thing is to be healthy and nonjudgemental about others. You never know WHY he or she is too fat or too skinny. It may not have anything to do with his/her diet or exercise habits at all.

On Miss Monroe's size. In England a size eight is generally the smallest size you can buy in most shops. The dress sizes you are reffering to are the British sizes where 10-14 are seen as normal/aesthetically pleasing. Marilyn was a 14 for the majority of her life, mainly due to her bust size anyway. I also believe the Ms. Hurley needs a serious talk with her PR and Media person about the best way to make such comments, especially seen as only 2% of the world (an 18 country survey I think) deem themselves beautiful. If she wishes to make comments they need to be more tactful and helpful rather than driving women further into the depths of despair. (I apologise for my spelling)

I'll avoid unnecessary bashing. However, Elizabeth's Hurley's comments were not merely insulting and tasteless, but they were very uneducated statements. They are the product of a person with a shallow nature, and a nonexistant understanding of past cultures. Marilyn Monroe was a woman of her times. Take a look at any of her contemporaries, for instance, Ava Gardner, Jane Russell, Kim Novak, Bettie Page, Elizabeth Taylor, Dorothy Dandridge, Lili St. Cyr, Rita Hayworth, Lana Turner. There's no need to look up their exact measurements or dress sizes, simply glance at their pictures and what do you notice? These are all fuller figured woman.

Voloptuous women were once an icon of tremendous beauty. This wasn't simply an American icon, this standard was held Internationally, embodied in women such as Brigitte Bardot, Sophia Loren, Anita Ekberg, Gina Lollonrigida, Joan Collins, Claudia Cardinale, Ursula Andress. This also wasn't simply a fad that occurred around Marilyn Monroe's time period. In fact, the further that you go back in time the more curvaceous the prototype for an attractive woman was. As far back as recorded time stretches, ample women were revered to the point where it was almost required to be consider anybody of beauty.

This is a concept that is completely reversed in modern day society, where it is almost essential that a woman be at the very minimum modeately thin, in order to be considered beautiful. It wasn't until the 60's, after the arrival of women like Audrey Hepburn, Jean Seberg, and ofcourse "Twiggy", that being thin became a stylish thing to be. I'd be here typing for a year, if I attempted to even give a brief overview of how women were portrayed in artwork throughout the world all through history, therefore I won't.

However, I will say that litterally almost every single image you can find of any woman (Unless it was a portrait of somebody, purposefully emaciated, as they lay on their deathbed) prior to the 1900s, would at the very least be viewed as "curvy", but more often than not, they would be viewed as "fat" by today's audiences. Even staying a little closer to home, within the early 1950's standards of beauty, there was nothing cute about being a size 2 in those days. The perfect hourglass figure was not thin and svelte. A woman possessing the original hourglass figure was suppose to litterally take on the entire shape of the hourglass. This meant, a very full top, which tapered and flared out into large round hips.

Okay first of all, Elizabeth Hurley was a bit wrong to say that Marilyn Monroe was fat but she's right to say that fat people should wear tight clothes. Why wear clothes that causes your fat to be more apparent? Why not dress in clothes that are flattering to your shape? And another thing, Norma Jean DID have plastic surgery. Not only did she have cosmetic dental surgery, minor stuff, she also had her nose and chin surgically perfected. I suggest you so called die-hard fans check your facts before making statements like that.

To look the way she does now, Miss Elizabeth Frankhurleyenstein needed:

- New teeth covers, to hide her real small, grey-ish teeth.

- Back molars removed to make her face look sharper.

- New cheeks.

- New collagen lips.

- Extreme eyebrows definitive hair removal.

- New boobs, since she was as flat as a plank.

And only God knows what more, look for her old movies like "Remando al viento", and you will not recognize her.

Marilyn Monroe's IQ test scored as high as Einstein, and she mostly did not kill herself because of her lovely curves, but perhaps because she was abused when she was a kid, and she kept on being abused when she became a movies star.

I wish people like that Hurley freak, whose IQ test probably scores as high as a goose, shut their strap but for saying the lines in the moronic movies they make.

She recently married a handsome Indian guy who comes from money and got in all kinds of trouble for disrespecting their religious traditions. Clearly, she may be beautiful on the outside, but she has much to learn about true inner beauty. Sadly, she'll never be the icon that Marilyn was, I bet if she thought she could be she'd sell her soul to the devil and gain 20 lbs.

There was something wrong with her calling Monroe fat, because she was actually very slim, but I do see her other point. I'm sick of seeing people (overweight or not) buying clothes that don't fit them. Even the slimmest person can let a roll or two hang over if they get tight enough pants. Clothes that are too small make people look bigger; it's a common fact. No big contriversy there.
